Tanzania can truly claim to be the home of "Safari" since the word is Kiswahili for "journey." And there’s no better place to enjoy the enriching wildlife experience than Tanzania. The country’s game viewing experiences are widely regarded as the best in Africa.
It’s the place to see seemingly endless herds of wildebeest and zebras trekking across the plains on their annual migration, followed by the predators; lion, cheetah and hyena. It’s elephant country also, boasting some of the largest populations in the world. And it’s home to chimpanzee, now so rarely seen in the wild.

HORSEBACK SAFARI
This is probably your best chance to experience a truly mobile horseback safari. Riders can now experience the ultimate African adventure, exploring the wilderness of the West-Kilimanjaro-Area from horseback.
You can ride with a herd of zebra or wildebeest across the plains, track elephant and buffalo in the bush or simply watch the setting sun whilst listening to the calls of the wild. Qualified guides will lead you on this journey, sharing with you their intimate knowledge of the wilderness.
With the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro rising to your East and Mt. Meru to the West, this safari takes place in one of the most dramatically beautiful settings in East Africa.
It is a wonderful experience and we hope you enjoy it as much as we all do!

4 Nights/ 5 Days – Horseback Safari Adventure.

Day – 1 – Arrive at Kilimanjaro Arrival International Airport, meet and transfer to Impala Hotel for overnight on bed and breakfast basis.

Day – 2 - Arrive at Makoa Farm.
After breakfast transfer to Makoa Farm, our starting point for the safari. The 358-acre coffee and horse farm is nestled into the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. During the afternoon we will introduce you to the horses where you can choose one to match your size and skills. Then we embark on a ride so you can become familiar with the farm and with your horse.

The ride follows the boundary of the farm through grass and bush land which is used for grazing horses and cattle. Wild animals also inhabit the area, these include Sykes monkeys, yellow baboons, duikers, bushbucks, reedbucks and bush pigs as well as nocturnal animals like aardvarks, porcupines and jackals.

Day – 3 - West-Kilimanjaro Wilderness.
In the morning we load the horses and drive with them to the plains between Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru we offload the horses and ride to the northwest. The landscape changes completely as we head through a mixture of open grassland and thorn bush savannah. Along the way we may encounter the first antelopes, zebra maybe some ostriches and jackals.

We will choose an acacia tree for a picnic lunch.
After a small siesta we continue our way to Mgunga camp arriving by sunset, there is time to refresh with a hot bush shower before dinner. Our camp chef will impress you with his culinary skills, despite the rustic setting. After dinner, retire to the campfire and marvel at the enormous night sky before falling asleep to the sounds of the African night.

Day – 4 – Game viewing from horseback.
After early morning tea or coffee, we mount our horses and head out into the reserve. Don’t forget your binoculars and camera! Slowly and carefully we approach the wildlife we find along the way - elephants, lesser kudus, antelopes, gazelles and a lot of other animals.
This fabulous ride takes us over open plains through rolling grasslands.

An exciting day with the opportunity to see elands, sometimes up to hundred, and large herds of zebra and wildebeest grazing on the plains. We return to camp for lunch. After some rest we start again and when the weather is clear then there are fantastic views of Mt. Meru and Kilimanjaro! We spend a wonderful sunset on horseback before you have a drink around the camp fire. This is a safari the way it was meant to be!

Day – 5 - Back to Makoa - Farm.
Our track again follows the riverbed with its huge wild fig trees. Our last day in the savanna. Keep an eye out for elephants near camp as it is not unusual to have elephants watching us during breakfast if they not already visited us for dinner. Today we will explore the area of ‘Tembo bridge’ and seek out herds of elephants in between the euphorbia forest.

Later we continue our way southeast passing the plains between Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro. See herd animals watching the horses with interest, then we stop en route for a picnic lunch. Later afternoon we meet the vehicle and transport the horses back to Makoa Farm. Enjoy the view of Mt. Kilimanjaro while sitting on the veranda with a sunset drink. Then transfer to Arusha. Evening you can refresh and relax in your day room. If you're continuing with one of our scheduled departures you'll overnight and begin your wildlife safari the next day. Otherwise you'll continue according to your onward arrangements.
