If you only have a couple of days, this short Northern Circuit safari fits two of Tanzania’s best wildlife areas into one night away from Arusha. On Day 1 you spend a full day in Tarangire National Park, known for its large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and rich birdlife, with a picnic lunch inside the park. On Day 2 you descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a crater floor of around 260 sq km, where lions, elephants, hippos and other wildlife share a single wide open space. The itinerary is compact and intense, but it captures the essence of Tanzania’s wilderness, with expert local guiding, dramatic landscapes and memorable wildlife encounters. Itinerary
Day 1 — Arusha to Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, at around 08:00, you depart from your hotel in Arusha and drive to Tarangire National Park. You spend the day on a full game drive in this wildlife-rich park, famous for its large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and diverse birdlife. The Tarangire River is the main source of fresh water for wildlife in the dry season, when animals concentrate along its banks, and more than 550 bird species have been recorded. Lunch is served at a designated picnic site inside the park, and in the afternoon you continue your game viewing before driving to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 2 — Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha
After an early breakfast and check-out you depart with a packed lunch and drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You then descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a full game drive on the crater floor, one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife destinations. You may see a wide variety of wildlife, including elephants, buffaloes, zebras, hippos and flamingos, and predators such as lions, cheetahs and hyenas, plus, with luck, the endangered black rhino. A picnic lunch is served inside the crater, and in the late afternoon you climb back up and return to Arusha, where the safari ends.
