This three-day safari is built around a flight. You leave Mombasa early in the morning and fly over the Rift Valley to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, so you arrive in time for lunch and your first game drive on the same day. The reserve covers about 1,510 square kilometres in Narok County and was established in 1961. It is the northernmost part of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem, and each year blue wildebeest migrate north into the reserve, crossing the Mara River, usually arriving around July and leaving around October. Two full days in the reserve give you time to track predators, enjoy a picnic on the banks of the Mara River and see the Big Five if you are lucky. You can finish the trip with a flight back to the coast or a flight to Nairobi, which makes this a short and efficient way to see one of Kenya’s best-known reserves.

Itinerary
Day 1 — Flight from Mombasa to the Maasai Mara
You are collected from your Mombasa hotel and transferred to the airport for your flight to the Maasai Mara, which departs at 7:30 am. You arrive in the Mara at about 10:15 am, where your driver-guide meets you and drives you to the camp, with an introductory game drive on the way. You arrive for lunch at Ashnil Mara Camp, then relax by the pool. At 4:00 pm you set out on another game drive, running until 6:00 pm. You have dinner and an overnight stay at the camp.
Day 2 — Full-Day Game Drive in the Maasai Mara
You spend the day on a full-day game drive, from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm, searching for the Big Five and many other species that live on this savannah, though sightings can’t be guaranteed. You have a picnic lunch on the banks of the Mara River, then return to camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3 — Flight from the Maasai Mara to the Coast or Nairobi
After breakfast you leave camp with a packed lunch for a final game drive, then head to the airstrip. You have one of two options.
Coastal option: a flight to Mombasa, Diani or Malindi, with a packed lunch. On arrival, our driver collects you and transfers you to your hotel.
Nairobi option: a game drive followed by a flight to Nairobi, departing at 11:15 am and arriving at 12:15 pm. You are then transferred to the Carnivore Restaurant for lunch, and after lunch you are dropped at your hotel or the airport.

Best Time to Go
The Maasai Mara can be visited all year round, and game viewing is good in every month. The wildebeest migration is the seasonal highlight, with the herds usually arriving around July and most leaving around October. The dry months from June to October are generally the most comfortable for game drives, while the long rains from roughly April to May and the short rains in November and December can make tracks muddy. Will we see the Big Five?
The Big Five are found in the Maasai Mara, and your Day 2 full-day game drive gives you the best chance to see them. Sightings can’t be guaranteed on any single day.
Can we depart from Ukunda instead of Mombasa?
Yes, the safari can depart from Mombasa or Ukunda Airport. If you are staying near Ukunda or Diani, please ask our team to arrange a Ukunda transfer, which carries an extra cost.
When is the wildebeest migration?
The herds usually arrive in the Maasai Mara around July and most leave around October. Timing changes from year to year, so the migration can’t be guaranteed on your dates.
