This four-day safari combines two of Kenya’s best-known reserves. The drive from Nairobi follows the base of the Rift Valley through the Maasai town of Narok to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, which covers about 1,510 square kilometres and was established in 1961. The reserve is the northernmost part of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem, and each year wildebeest and zebra migrate between Tanzania’s Serengeti and the Mara, with herds usually arriving around July and most leaving around October. The second stop is Lake Nakuru National Park, about 188 square kilometres, established in 1961 and known for its flamingos, which often number more than a million, along with black and white rhinos and Rothschild’s giraffes. Two nights in the Maasai Mara and one at Lake Nakuru make a balanced trip of wildlife, birds and open savannah.

Itinerary
Day 1 — Nairobi to the Maasai Mara National Reserve
After breakfast at 8:00 am, you drive along the base of the Rift Valley, through the Maasai town of Narok, to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. You arrive in time for lunch at your lodge. At 3:00 pm you set out on an afternoon game drive in the reserve. The reserve borders Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park to the south, and wildebeest and zebra move between the two parks each year. The Mara’s plains fill with migrating herds in the months of August and September, joining resident lions, cheetahs, leopards, buffalo and impala. You have dinner and an overnight stay at your lodge.
Day 2 — Full Day in the Maasai Mara
After breakfast at the lodge, you take morning and afternoon game drives in the Maasai Mara. The lodge is on a full-board basis, so all meals are included.
Day 3 — Maasai Mara to Lake Nakuru National Park
After breakfast you leave the Maasai Mara at 8:30 am for Lake Nakuru National Park, with a game drive on the way. You arrive at Sarova Lion Hill Lodge in time for lunch. At 3:30 pm you set out on an afternoon game drive. Lake Nakuru is a sanctuary for a sizeable number of the endangered black and white rhinos, along with the Rothschild’s (Baringo) giraffe. The park is also home to waterbuck, impala, zebra, buffalo, lions and leopards, and a wide variety of birdlife on and around the lake. Flamingos turn the lake pink, although their numbers change with the water and food. You have all meals and an overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 4 — Lake Nakuru to Nairobi
At 8:00 am you have breakfast and check out, then take a short game drive on the way to Nairobi. You arrive in Nairobi around midday and are dropped at your Nairobi hotel. Lunch is on your own account.

Best Time to Go
This safari can be taken all year round, and game viewing in both parks is good in every month. The wildebeest migration in the Maasai Mara is seasonal, with herds usually arriving around July and most leaving around October. The flamingos at Lake Nakuru come and go with water and food conditions, so their numbers change from year to year and have been lower recently. The dry months from June to October are generally the most comfortable for game drives, while the long rains from roughly April to May and the short rains in November and December can make tracks muddy. Where does this safari start and end, and how long does it last?
It starts in Nairobi with an 8:00 am pickup on Day 1 and ends with a drop-off at your Nairobi hotel on Day 4. The safari runs for 4 days and 3 nights: two nights in the Maasai Mara National Reserve and one at Sarova Lion Hill Lodge in Lake Nakuru National Park.
Will we see the wildebeest migration?
The herds usually arrive in the Maasai Mara around July and most leave around October, with August and September often the busiest months. The migration depends on the rains and can’t be guaranteed on your dates.
Will we see rhinos and flamingos at Lake Nakuru?
Lake Nakuru is known for its black and white rhinos and its flamingos, but sightings and flamingo numbers can’t be guaranteed. Flamingo numbers change with water and food conditions and have been lower in recent years.
Are the Rothschild’s and Baringo giraffes the same?
Yes. Rothschild’s giraffe is also known as the Baringo giraffe, and Lake Nakuru National Park has a number of Rothschild’s giraffes that were relocated from western Kenya.
Is lunch on the last day included?
No. Lunch on Day 4 is on your own account, so please plan for it when we drop you at your Nairobi hotel around midday.
What happens after the safari ends in Nairobi?
You are dropped at your Nairobi hotel on Day 4. Accommodation after Day 4 is not included, and any onward travel is not included in the rate.
