This 4-day, 3-night safari gives Zanzibar travellers a full taste of the Northern Circuit, with some Chagga culture added on the final morning. You fly early to Arusha on Day 1 and head to Tarangire National Park, spend a full day on game drives in the Serengeti and then descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Itinerary
Day 1 — Zanzibar to Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Depending on the flight, you depart early in the morning from Zanzibar to Arusha, where you’re met and greeted on arrival and driven to Tarangire National Park with your packed lunch for a game drive. At 13:00 you take lunch at the park’s picnic area, and in the evening you drive to Karatu for dinner and an overnight stay. Tarangire is known for its large elephant herds and ancient baobab trees.
Day 2 — Full Day in Serengeti National Park
After breakfast you depart for Serengeti National Park for a full day of game drives on the great Serengeti plains, one of the most famous wildlife sanctuaries in the world. Depending on the time of year and the migration of the herds, you may see wildebeest, lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, baboons, hippos, antelopes and many birds and other species. In the evening you drive to your camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3 — Ngorongoro Crater to Moshi
After breakfast you drive to the Ngorongoro Crater and descend to the crater floor with your lunch box for game viewing. The crater is rich in wildlife, with animals tending to keep to their own parts of it. Your packed lunch is served on the crater floor at the picnic site near the Lerai forest or the hippo pool. In the late afternoon you climb out of the crater and drive to Moshi, at the foot of Kilimanjaro, for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 4 — Materuni Waterfalls, Chagga Lunch and Coffee Tour, Flight to Zanzibar
After breakfast, in the morning, your English-speaking guide picks you up from your hotel in Moshi and drives you to Materuni Village, where you register at the village office before your trip begins. You first hike to the waterfalls, around a 40-minute walk, and on the way your guide tells you about the culture of the Chagga, village life and the surrounding fauna and flora. The views are breathtaking, and with some luck you’ll see the summit of Kilimanjaro. When you reach the falls, which are more than 80 m high, you can cool off in the pool at the bottom, so bring your swimwear.
You then return slowly with your guide to Materuni village for a traditional Chagga lunch, and the chance to taste local banana beer. The coffee experience follows, where you learn how coffee is cultivated, dried, roasted and processed, and are invited to help grind it, traditionally accompanied by Chagga songs and dances. At 11:30 you drive back to Arusha and are dropped at the airport to connect with your flight to Zanzibar and your onward arrangements.

Best Time to Go
No travel window was given for this itinerary, so the advice below comes from the route and general seasonality. The dry months, roughly June to October, are usually the easiest for game viewing, and from June to November large herds of zebra, wildebeest and buffalo gather in Tarangire National Park. The wildebeest in the Serengeti follow the rains, so ask our team where the herds are likely to be on your dates, and clear mornings in the dry season give the best chance of seeing the summit of Kilimanjaro on the Materuni walk. The green months bring lush landscapes and fewer visitors, though roads and the waterfall trail can be muddier. For the best overall balance, aim for June to October. After a refreshing swim, you return to the village for a traditional Chagga lunch, and then take part in a coffee experience, from cultivation and roasting to grinding, with Chagga songs and dances. Bring swimwear if you’d like to swim.
Can we see the Big Five on this safari?
This safari visits Tarangire, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, where you may see elephants, lions and buffalo. Leopards are hard to spot and rhinos are very rare, so the full Big Five can’t be guaranteed on any safari.
How long is the drive from the Ngorongoro Crater to Moshi on Day 3?
