This five-day fly-in safari takes you from the Kenyan coast to two of the country’s best-known parks, with flights in place of long road transfers. Amboseli National Park covers about 392 square kilometres at its core, and is known for its large herds of elephants, which have been studied since 1972, with Mount Kilimanjaro often visible above the plains. The second part of the trip is the Maasai Mara National Reserve, about 1,510 square kilometres and established in 1961, where herds of wildebeest usually arrive around July and leave around October, crossing the Mara River as they go. You stay in a mix of lodges and tented camps, with bush meals and campfire dinners, and you meet Maasai guides who tell you about life on the plains.

Itinerary
Day 1 — Flight from the Coast to Amboseli
You are driven to Moi International Airport in Mombasa or to Ukunda Airstrip in Diani, and transfers from Malindi and Watamu can be arranged. You board a scheduled flight to Amboseli. After landing on the bush airstrip, your guide meets you and takes you to the lodge or tented camp. After lunch and settling in, you set out on an afternoon game drive with a knowledgeable guide and tracker. You have dinner and an overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 2 — Full Day in Amboseli National Park
You spend the day in Amboseli National Park, with Mount Kilimanjaro, often described as the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, rising above it. The park is home to a large herd of elephants known for their impressive tusks. You take game drives and bush walks in the private concession, subject to park rules. At breakfast you enjoy a bush meal under an umbrella thorn tree, and in the evening you gather around the campfire. You have dinner and an overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 3 — Flight from Amboseli to the Maasai Mara
After breakfast you are driven to the airstrip to board a scheduled flight to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. A guide drives you from the airstrip to your camp for lunch and settling in. In the afternoon you go on a game drive in one of Africa’s best-known reserves. You have dinner and an overnight stay at the camp.
Day 4 — Full Day in the Maasai Mara National Reserve
You spend the day watching game in the Mara, home of the Great Migration. Wildebeest and zebra move in a continual search for fresh grazing and water, and the Mara is good big-cat country, where lion sightings are common. You also take a guided walk led by a knowledgeable Maasai guide, who explains the daily challenges of life on the plains, subject to park rules. You have dinner and an overnight stay at the camp.
Day 5 — Flight from the Maasai Mara to the Coast
On your final morning you take a last game drive and enjoy some final photos before breakfast. You are then driven to the airstrip to catch a scheduled flight to Mombasa, Malindi or Diani.

Best Time to Go
This safari can be taken all year round. The Maasai Mara’s wildebeest migration is seasonal, with herds usually arriving around July and leaving around October. Mount Kilimanjaro is clearer in the drier months, when the sky is less hazy, so the June to October and December to March spells are generally best for the mountain view. The long rains from roughly April to May and the short rains in November and December can make tracks muddy. Our team can advise on the best dates for your trip.

Where does this safari start and end, and how long does it last?
It starts on the Kenyan coast in Mombasa, Diani, Malindi or Watamu, with a transfer to Moi International Airport or Ukunda Airstrip on Day 1. It ends with a flight back to Mombasa, Malindi or Diani on Day 5. The safari runs for 5 days and 4 nights: two in Amboseli National Park and two in the Maasai Mara National Reserve.
Which departure point should I choose?
Mombasa and Ukunda (Diani) are the main departure points. If you are staying in Malindi or Watamu, please ask our team to arrange the transfer for your location.
Will we see the Big Five?
Amboseli and the Maasai Mara are both known for big game, and lions, elephants and buffaloes are commonly seen in the Mara. Sightings can’t be guaranteed on any single day, and rhinos and leopards are harder to find.
Are the flights included?
The scheduled flights between the coast, Amboseli and the Maasai Mara are included, and our team will confirm the airlines, flight times and baggage allowances when you book. International flights are not included.
Can we visit a Maasai community?
The itinerary includes a guided walk with a Maasai guide in the Mara on Day 4. A community visit is not part of the itinerary, so please ask our team whether one can be arranged and what it would cost.
Can we see the wildebeest migration?
The herds usually arrive in the Maasai Mara around July and most leave around October, so the migration is best seen in those months. Timing changes from year to year, so it can’t be guaranteed on your dates.
