6 Days Great Wildebeest Migration Safari – Northern Serengeti & Mara River

The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of nature’s most spectacular wildlife events. The mass movement of millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles begins at the start of the dry season in June, as herds move in search of fresh grazing and water. By August and September, the migration reaches Kenya’s Maasai Mara, before gradually returning to Tanzania. For this reason, the best time to visit Serengeti National Park is from July to early October, when dramatic river crossings and intense predator action can be witnessed.

Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha – Tarangire National Park

After breakfast at around 08:30 hrs, depart from Arusha and drive to Tarangire National Park for a game drive. Tarangire is well known for its large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees, and diverse wildlife. Lunch will be served at a designated picnic site inside the park. In the afternoon, continue with game viewing before driving to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Karatu – Northern Serengeti

After breakfast at around 08:00 hrs, depart with a packed lunch and drive towards the Northern Serengeti via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Enjoy game viewing en route as you trace the movement of the Great Migration. Lunch will be taken during the drive before continuing to the Northern Serengeti plains. In the evening, arrive at your camp or lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Northern Serengeti – Mara River Area

Begin the day with an early morning game drive at around 06:30 hrs, exploring the wildlife-rich Northern Serengeti. Return to the lodge for breakfast and some leisure time. After lunch at the lodge, head out for an afternoon game drive around the Mara River, following the migration routes and searching for possible wildebeest river crossings.

Day 4: Full Day Northern Serengeti – Mara River

Spend a full day in the Northern Serengeti focusing on the Mara River area. This is one of the most thrilling wildlife experiences in Africa.

Day 5: Northern Serengeti – Central Serengeti

Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater – Arusha

After breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive on the crater floor. The crater hosts an incredible concentration of wildlife, including lions, elephants, buffaloes, hippos, and the endangered black rhino. Enjoy a picnic lunch near Lerai Forest or the hippo pool. In the afternoon, ascend the crater rim and drive back to Arusha for onward arrangements.
