Why Choose This Safari?
This six-day expedition crosses the Kenya and Tanzania border and follows the wildlife across two of East Africa’s most famous ecosystems. The first two days are spent in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, about 1,510 square kilometres and established in 1961, which forms the northern part of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. Wildebeest usually arrive there around July and leave around October, crossing the Mara River as they go. The next three nights are in the Serengeti National Park, about 14,763 square kilometres, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where around 1.5 million wildebeest live and more than 3,000 lions have been counted. The trip ends at the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where the crater floor covers about 260 square kilometres and is enclosed by cliffs about 600 metres high, before the drive on to Arusha.

Itinerary
Day 1 — Nairobi to the Maasai Mara National Reserve
You start with an early morning drive from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. You arrive in time for lunch, then take an afternoon game drive. The Mara is the northern part of the Serengeti ecosystem, and you watch for the seasonal migration of wildebeest and zebra, with predators following them. You return to camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 2 — Full Day in the Maasai Mara National Reserve
After breakfast you take a full-day game drive with a packed lunch. The reserve is home to lions, abundant wildlife and hundreds of bird species, including eagles, vultures, storks and sunbirds. You return to camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3 — Maasai Mara to the Serengeti National Park
You begin with an early morning game drive in the Maasai Mara, then depart for the Isebania border. You complete the border formalities (visa and crossing costs not included) and continue by road to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, with game viewing on the way. You arrive at your tented camp or lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 4 — Serengeti National Park Full-Day Game Drive
You spend the day on morning and afternoon game drives across the Serengeti Plains. The park has about 1.5 million wildebeest, with zebras, Thomson’s gazelles, lions, cheetahs and hyenas. Smaller animals such as rock hyraxes and mongooses also live here, along with a wide variety of birds. You return to camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 5 — Serengeti National Park, Extended Game Drives
You take extended morning and afternoon game drives, exploring different regions of the park. Depending on the season, you may see the Great Migration, predator and prey interactions and abundant wildlife. You enjoy a picnic lunch in the park, then return to camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 6 — Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater and Arusha
You wake early for a morning game drive in the Serengeti, then transfer to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s largest intact, unfilled volcanic caldera, for a game drive on the crater floor. You may see elephants, black rhinos (rare, not guaranteed), lions, zebras and flamingos. You enjoy a picnic lunch near the hippo pool, then ascend the crater and drive to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon.

Best Time to Go
This safari can be taken all year round. The Great Migration is seasonal, with wildebeest usually in the Maasai Mara around July and leaving around October, and in the Serengeti the wildebeest calve from about January to March. The dry months from June to October are generally the most comfortable for game drives, while the long rains from roughly April to May and the short rains in November and December can make tracks muddy. Where does this expedition start and end, and how long does it last?
It starts at Nairobi (NBO), Kenya, and ends at Arusha (ARS), Tanzania. The trip runs for 6 days and 5 nights, with two nights in the Maasai Mara National Reserve and three in the Serengeti National Park.
What do we need for the border crossing at Isebania?
You will need the correct visas and passports for both Kenya and Tanzania, and you will complete the border formalities on Day 3. Visa fees and crossing costs are not included, so please ask our team for the requirements for your nationality before you travel.
Will we see the Big Five?
Lions, elephants and buffaloes are commonly seen in these parks, and the Ngorongoro Crater is home to black rhinos. Rhinos are rare, so a sighting of all five can’t be guaranteed.
Can we see the Great Migration?
The herds usually reach the Maasai Mara around July and most leave around October, and in the Serengeti the wildebeest calve from about January to March. The migration depends on the rains and can’t be guaranteed on your dates.
Is the drive from the Serengeti to Arusha long?
Yes, the final day includes a descent into the Ngorongoro Crater and a road transfer to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon. Please ask our team for an estimate of the drive times.
What happens after the expedition ends in Arusha?
You finish in Arusha (ARS) on Day 6, arriving in the late afternoon. Accommodation in Arusha is not included, and onward flights are not included in the rate.
