This six-day safari links the Maasai Mara with a string of lakes along the base of the Great Rift Valley. The Maasai Mara National Reserve covers about 1,510 square kilometres and was established in 1961, and its wildebeest herds usually arrive around July and leave around October. Lake Nakuru National Park, about 188 square kilometres, is known for its flamingos, rhinos and birdlife. Lake Bogoria National Reserve, about 107 square kilometres and established in 1970, is an alkaline lake with hot springs and geysers, and it can hold up to two million flamingos at times. The journey ends at Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake at about 1,884 metres, where you take a boat ride, see hippos and enjoy more than 400 bird species. You combine game drives, a boat trip and guided walks in one trip.

Itinerary
Day 1 — Nairobi to the Maasai Mara National Reserve
At 8:30 am you are collected from your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) and driven through the Great Rift Valley to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. You have lunch and game viewing on the way. You check into your lodge or camp, then take an afternoon game drive in the reserve. You have dinner and an overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 2 — Full Day in the Maasai Mara National Reserve
You spend the full day in the reserve, with morning, afternoon and evening game drives. Lunch, dinner and an overnight stay are at your lodge. Evening drive timing follows the reserve’s rules, so your guide will explain the schedule.
Day 3 — Maasai Mara to Lake Nakuru National Park
After breakfast you drive from the Maasai Mara to Lake Nakuru National Park, arriving in time for lunch. You take afternoon game drives in the park, looking for the rhinos, flamingos and other wildlife the park is known for. You have dinner and an overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 4 — Lake Nakuru to Lake Bogoria
After breakfast you drive to Lake Bogoria National Reserve and walk around the lake, where flamingos feed on the algae that thrive in its alkaline water and other water birds gather. You also visit the natural hot springs, which are very hot. Your guide will explain how to walk near and around the hot water safely. You have lunch, dinner and an overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 5 — Lake Bogoria to Lake Naivasha
After breakfast you drive to Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake in the Rift Valley, and have lunch at your lodge. After lunch you take a boat ride on the lake. Local boat trips take you to the main hippo area and Crescent Island, and you return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 6 — Lake Naivasha to Nairobi and Airport Transfer
After breakfast you drive back to Nairobi, arriving in time for lunch. You are then transferred to the airport for your flight home, or onward travel.

Best Time to Go
This safari can be taken all year round, and each lake and reserve has something to see in every month. The Maasai Mara’s wildebeest migration is seasonal, with the herds usually arriving around July and most leaving around October. Flamingo numbers at Lake Bogoria and Lake Nakuru change with water and food conditions, and they can be very large at times. Lake Naivasha’s birdlife is present through the year. The dry months from June to October are generally the most comfortable for game drives and walks, while the long rains from roughly April to May and the short rains in November and December can make tracks muddy. Where does this safari start and end, and how long does it last?

Is it safe to walk near the hot springs at Lake Bogoria?
The hot springs are extremely hot. Your safari guide will explain how to walk near and around the hot water, and you should follow their instructions at all times. Please ask our team for the latest guidance before you travel.
Will we see flamingos?
Flamingos are often present at Lake Bogoria and Lake Nakuru, and up to two million may feed at Lake Bogoria at times. Numbers change with the water and food, so they can’t be guaranteed on your dates.
Is the Lake Naivasha boat ride included?
Yes, the boat ride on Day 5 is included, and our team will confirm the operator and timing when you book. Local boat trips take you to the hippo area and Crescent Island, and any extra fees for the island are not included.
Can we see the wildebeest migration?
The herds usually arrive in the Maasai Mara around July and most leave around October, so the migration is best seen in those months. It depends on the rains and can’t be guaranteed on your dates.
What happens after the safari ends in Nairobi?
You are transferred from Nairobi to the airport on Day 6 for your onward flight, and the transfer is included. The flight itself is not included, and any accommodation after Day 6 is not included either.
