Why Choose This Safari?
This seven-day photographic safari takes you through three of Kenya’s most rewarding parks, with a camera at the centre of every day. You begin with two nights in Samburu National Reserve, an area of about 165 square kilometres established in 1985, where the Ewaso Ng’iro river runs through doum palm groves and riverine forest, and Nile crocodiles bask along its banks. The journey continues past Nyahururu Falls, also known as Thomson’s Falls, which drop about 74 metres. You then spend a night at Lake Nakuru National Park, known for its flamingos, rhinos and birdlife, before three nights in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, about 1,510 square kilometres, where the wildebeest migration usually arrives around July and leaves around October. Each stop gives you new light, new subjects and new chances to capture the wildlife.

Itinerary
Day 1 — Nairobi to Samburu
At 8:30 am you drive from Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve, arriving in time for lunch. In the afternoon you take a game drive in the reserve. You have dinner and an overnight stay at the camp.
Day 2 — Game Drives in Samburu
You take early morning and afternoon game drives to look for the less common species of Samburu, including the reticulated giraffe, Grévy’s zebra, gerenuk, beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and vulturine guinea fowl. You may also see lions on the grass and leopards in the trees, along with plenty of other plains game, though sightings can’t be guaranteed. Between meals you can make an optional visit to a Samburu village. You have all meals and an overnight stay at the camp.
Day 3 — Samburu to Lake Nakuru National Park
After breakfast you drive from Samburu with a packed lunch. On the way you stop at Nyahururu Falls, or Thomson’s Falls, which drop about 74 metres near the town of Nyahururu. You then check in at your lodge at Lake Nakuru National Park and take an afternoon game drive. You have dinner and an overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 4 — Lake Nakuru to the Maasai Mara National Reserve
After breakfast you check out of Lake Nakuru and drive to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, arriving in time for lunch. In the afternoon you relax at your camp before dinner and an overnight stay.
Days 5 and 6 — Maasai Mara National Reserve
After breakfast at the lodge, you take morning and afternoon game drives inside the reserve. The Mara is famous for black-maned lions, and you may see cheetahs, buffalo, wildebeest, zebras, leopards, Grant’s gazelles and hyenas. Rhinos are rare, so a sighting can’t be guaranteed. You extend one drive to the hippo point, where hippos submerge as vehicles approach and surface moments later, while crocodiles sunbathe on the river banks with their mouths open. Between meals you can make an optional visit to a Maasai village to learn about their culture, and a hot air balloon ride can be arranged at extra cost. You have all meals and an overnight stay at the lodge on both days.
Day 7 — Maasai Mara to Nairobi and Airport Transfer
You wake at 6:00 am for an early morning game drive, then return to camp at 8:30 am for breakfast. After lunch you drive back to Nairobi and are transferred to the airport for your flight home. The flight home is not included.

Best Time to Go
This safari can be taken all year round. The wildebeest migration is seasonal, with the herds usually arriving in the Maasai Mara around July and most leaving around October. Samburu is generally easiest for game viewing in the drier months from June to October and from about January to March. The long rains from roughly April to May and the short rains in November and December can bring cloud and rain, which can soften the light. For photography, the early morning and late afternoon light is usually the best. Our team can advise on the best dates for your trip.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where does this safari start and end, and how long does it last?
It starts in Nairobi with an 8:30 am departure on Day 1, and ends with a transfer to Nairobi airport on Day 7. The safari runs for 7 days and 6 nights: two in Samburu National Reserve, one at Lake Nakuru National Park and three in the Maasai Mara National Reserve.
What photography equipment should we bring?
The safari is designed for photography, so please bring your own camera gear, spare batteries and memory cards. A telephoto lens is useful for distant wildlife, and a bean bag or support can steady the camera from a safari vehicle. Please check with our team about any restrictions on drones or tripods in the parks before you travel.
Will we see the wildebeest migration?
The herds usually reach the Maasai Mara around July and most leave around October. The migration depends on the rains and can’t be guaranteed on your dates.
Will we see rhinos and leopards?
Rhinos are rare, and Lake Nakuru and the Maasai Mara are the best places to look for them. Leopards are often seen in trees in Samburu, but sightings can’t be guaranteed on any single drive.
Are the village visits and the balloon ride included?
No. The Samburu and Maasai village visits are optional and carry an extra cost, and the hot air balloon ride in the Mara is also an extra cost that can be arranged on request. Please ask our team for prices.
What happens after the safari ends?
You are transferred to Nairobi airport on Day 7 for your flight home. The flight is not included in the rate, and accommodation after Day 7 is not included.
