Rwanda has two national parks built around primates, and this is the one itinerary that gives you both gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park on Day 3, chimpanzee trekking and a canopy walk in Nyungwe Forest on Day 6, with golden monkeys and a Lake Kivu boat trip filling the days in between. It's a genuinely full week, not a long weekend stretched thin: real time at each park, a cultural stop at Iby'Iwacu village, and a final-day detour to the King's Palace Museum in Nyanza on the drive back to Kigali. If you want to leave Rwanda having done both of its signature treks rather than choosing one, this is built for that.
Once you've cleared immigration at Kigali International Airport, your safari driver meets you for a short briefing and the 20-minute transfer to your hotel. It's a light first day, just enough time to settle in before the week ahead.
After breakfast, you're picked up for a Kigali city tour that includes the Genocide Memorial Centre — a necessary, sobering stop before heading further into the country. From there it's a 2.5-hour drive to Musanze, near Volcanoes National Park, where you'll have lunch on arrival and a free afternoon to relax before dinner and overnight at your lodge.
After an early coffee and a briefing at park headquarters, you head into Volcanoes National Park with a packed lunch to track mountain gorillas — a trek that can take anywhere from half a day to a full day, depending on where the group has moved. Once you find them, you get a full hour watching their social life up close; it's worth packing proper walking shoes, water, insect repellent, sunscreen and a hat. After lunch back at the lodge, you visit Iby'Iwacu cultural village to see more of everyday Rwandan life before returning for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, you head back to the park for a golden monkey trekking briefing, following the same format as the previous day's gorilla trek, with another hour spent watching the monkeys once you find them. You return for lunch, then transfer to Gisenyi on Lake Kivu — about an hour and a half away — for a relaxed afternoon by the water.

Transport:
After breakfast, you transfer to Karongi for a boat trip on Lake Kivu, taking in several of its islands, before continuing on to Nyungwe National Park — passing traditional villages and farmland along the way. You'll arrive in the afternoon, have lunch, and have the rest of the day free.
After an early cup of coffee, you head into Nyungwe Forest — home to 13 primate species — for a briefing before setting off to track chimpanzees, with an hour guaranteed once you find them. After lunch back at the lodge, the afternoon's canopy walk takes you across a 70-meter suspended metal bridge through the forest canopy, a completely different vantage point on the park.
After breakfast at the lodge, you set off on the roughly six-hour drive back to Kigali, stopping in Nyanza along the way to visit the King's Palace Museum and learn about traditional Rwandan royal culture. You'll stop for lunch locally in Huye before continuing on, arriving in Kigali in the afternoon for your transfer to the airport.
