Itinerary
Day 1 — Arusha to Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, you depart Arusha for Tarangire National Park, a park often overlooked in favor of its more famous neighbors despite giant elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and a seasonal river that draws wildlife year-round. A leisurely game drive gives you good odds at elephant, giraffe, buffalo, zebra and wildebeest, with lion and leopard also present if you're fortunate. A picnic lunch served inside the park lets you take in the surroundings without rushing back to a vehicle. By late afternoon, you continue on to the cool highlands of Karatu for the night.
Day 2 — Karatu to Western Serengeti via Ngorongoro Conservation Area
The day starts with a scenic drive through the fertile Ngorongoro Highlands, passing local villages and rolling farmland with sweeping views of the crater rim before you continue west toward the Serengeti ecosystem. As you enter the Western Serengeti and the Grumeti region, wildlife sightings pick up noticeably the closer you get to the migration route. This part of the Serengeti sees far less traffic than the northern circuit, giving the whole afternoon a quieter, more personal feel.
Day 3 — Full Day in Western Serengeti: Migration Tracking
Your full day is spent exploring the Western Corridor, with a focus on the Grumeti River itself, where the migration typically gathers in May and June. It's one of the most tense and dramatic phases of the entire Great Migration: wildebeest hesitating at the riverbanks, massive Nile crocodiles waiting below, and lions and other predators patrolling nearby in case a crossing goes their way. Your guide tracks the herds throughout the day to maximize your chances of witnessing an actual crossing or predator action, with flexible game drives and a picnic lunch taken out in the bush.
Day 4 — Western Serengeti to Central Serengeti
After a morning game drive, you travel east toward the legendary Seronera region, the heart of the Serengeti. This area holds wildlife year-round thanks to its permanent water sources, and it's known for some of the best big-cat sightings anywhere in the park. Expect strong chances at lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant and hippo, alongside large herds of plains game, with an afternoon game drive rounding out your first taste of Central Serengeti.
Day 5 — Central Serengeti to Arusha via Ngorongoro
Your final morning starts with a game drive as the Serengeti wakes up, one of the best windows of the whole trip for predator sightings. After breakfast, you begin the journey back toward Arusha by way of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, arriving in the late afternoon and bringing your five-day Western Serengeti migration safari to a close.
